Desert Festival of Jaisalmer: A three day long colorful events displaying traditional culture, folk songs and dance of imperial state of Rajasthan, India. Main attractions of this festival is Jaisalmer Fort situated on Meru Hill and is built by the Bhati Rajput king Jaisal Singh in in 1156.

It is one of most awaited cultural and colorful festival showcasing Rajasthani folk songs and dance. This is best time to visit Jaisalmer to explore Rajasthani folk songs, arts of Kalbelia dances and turban tying competition or Mr Desert. The opening day of the festival unveils a fascinating procession that starts from the Jaisalmer Fort, and as it moves towards the Shahid Poonam Singh Stadium.

Camel racing is a popular activity during the festival.You can see gorgeously attired camel caravans moving at a placid pace towards the Sam sand dunes.

Folk artistes from across the state including the Gairs, Nats or the kalabaz, and fire-dancers, showcase a variety of thrilling acts.

Every year, the dunes of Jaisalmer, Rajasthan spring up in whimsical fashion as the culture of the state unravels with gusto. This festival is testament to why Rajasthan is a touristy hotspot, attracting visitors from India and all over the world.

Camel - known as the Ship of the Desert — be it camel polo, stunts on camel-back by agile young men and dance shows by the humped beasts that are beautifully turned out in tassels and beads and, of course, ghungroos. There’s more, besides tug-of-war, turban-tying and Mr Desert competitions, there’s also the long-moustache contest — the winner of which remains the cynosure of all eyes with everyone wanting a picture clicked with him.



The most beautiful attraction of the Rajasthan desert is the many tribes of nomads that have their own arts and handlooms on display.

Every Rajasthani celebration includes traditional Kalbeliya dance in which women move to the rhythm of snakes. Music of Maganiyaar gharaanas as well as other folk music is performed. Sword fights, puppet shows and acrobatic dances increase the amusement of Rajasthani fair.

This festival ends on Poornima, known as full moon day with a spectacular show of fireworks in the air in the Sam dunes with “Sonar Qila” Jaisalmer Fort in the background creating a fairy-tale ambiance
